Beauty Tips: DIY Natural Lotion

All Natural DIY Beauty Tips Are My Absolute Favorites.

During Thanksgiving I noticed my sensitive skin was not getting along  with the weather in Chicago. I saw significantly more flaking on my skin and looked pretty dry. I immediately went to my go to beauty tip of doubling my normal water intake to aid in hydration. After a week or so, I started experimenting with creating an all natural skin care solution.  Within a few trials, I am proud to announce, I have discovered just the perfect  mixture for my skin. My new go-to body lotion is ultra-moisturizing, light and oh-so fluffy.  Enjoying my second batch,  I’m absolutely loving how hydrated, soft and smooth my skin is feeling.

Finding the right ingredients and amounts for this mixture has been trial by error, but such a rewarding experience for me. With numerous options and natural ingredients available on the market, I have found the most important things to consider when creating the perfect recipe. First, I prefer a formula that absorbs both easily and harmlessly.  If a formula is light with natural ingredients, it is easier for your pores to absorb and your body to breakdown its remnants.  I avoid putting products on my skin that my digestive system cannot sufficiently break down, like mineral oil. Think about it, as products are absorbed by the skin, small amounts seep through into our bodies to be broken down and discharged. Secondly, I need moisture, moisture and more moisture.  I need a formula that leaves my skin feeling hydrated, soft and smooth all day. I prefer only applying lotion once a day, so an ultra moisturizing formula that leaves a light conditioning film is ideal. Lastly, I prefer a light and pleasant scent, one subtle enough to take a back seat to my perfume of choice. With skin being our largest organ; soft, moisturized and smooth skin is a beauty “must-have” and foundation for any good beauty regime.

Skin is our largest organ; use this DIY for soft, moisturized and smooth skin is a beauty “must-have” and foundation for any great beauty regime.

  • 1 cup of aloe vera gel
  • ½ cup of unrefined coconut oil
  • ½ teaspoon of glycerin
  • 1 teaspoon of Vitamin E oil
  • ¼ cup of grated beeswax
  • 1 tablespoons of rose water
  • 2 tablespoons of pure Shea butter
  • 5-8 drops of your favorite essential oil

Mix the aloe vera gel, vitamin E oil and essential oil in a small bowl.  Make sure all three are at least room temperature or warmer, to help emulsify the mixture.  Place the grated beeswax and coconut oil in a measuring cup. Place the measuring cup in a pot of water and bring to a light boil. As it heats, stir the mixture until the beeswax melts, then carefully remove the measuring cup from the pot.

Pour your beeswax and oil mixture into a blender, add in your aloe vera/coconut oil mixture, glycerin, rose water and Shea butter.  Blend the mixture for about three minutes, checking the consistency.  While blending the mixture, watch and be patient as you wait for your cream to emulsify. It should take no more than ten minutes. Use a spatula to keep the mixture from the sides within blades reach. The longer you blend the fluffier the mixture will become. I recommend not blending longer than two-minutes at a time. Once your mixture reaches your desired consistency, transfer into a clean jar or plastic container and use within three weeks.

I have enjoyed experimenting with different essential oils but right now, I’m loving lavender and eucalyptus. Enjoy your all-natural, ultra-moisturizing body lotion! Have fun playing with varying amounts of the ingredients based upon your own skin needs.
