Personal Branding: Branding You


Personal branding isn’t complicated.

Personal branding is simply how you are perceived in the world, but remember, the most successful people in business understand that impressions, especially first ones- matter in every circumstance.

In a nutshell, personal branding is how you show up in the world. It is the essence of your personal brand. Imagine if you could step outside yourself and observe you. Imagine yourself walking into the office in the morning. What is your energy like? How do you look? How do you make others feel? Are you confidently smiling, or looking like don’t speak to me? Are you making eye contact or looking towards the ground? Are your handshakes firm or limp? Do you appear control in situations or not?

Now lets switch gears, imagine yourself walking into a crowded room alone. Do you begin conversing with random people or do you sit solo? Do you feel comfortable communicating to other people regarding what you love doing and why? Imagine yourself on social media, what are the things you find relevant to share with social circles? Do people perceive you as happy, sad, smart, funny, critical, self-absorbed? Just a few questions to ask yourself about your personal brand.

Many personal brands place effort into pulling themselves together for the office but don’t pay much attention to how their brand image appear outside of professional settings.

Why should you care how you are perceived in the grocery store or at the mall? Or even social media, the people you interact with are just friends right? Well, it all depends on how important the impressions that are shaping peoples perceptions of you are. Remember, personal branding is all about perceptions, and you should always aim to be authentic. Just make sure the goals you have for your personal development and professional life are align with your everyday behaviors, conversations and image.

How others perceive you in the world is your personal brand. The things you do and say, the activities you engage in, the causes you support, the company you keep; and the way you make others feel are all components of building/supporting your brand image.
